Santoor musical instrument
Persian Santoor is a string instrument with strings stretched over a trapezoidal shaped box. Santoor’s invention is attributed to Farabi (9th century A.D.). The earliest sign of it comes from Assyrian and Babylonian stone carvings (669 B.C.); it shows the instrument being played while hanging from the player’s neck.
Persian Santoor In pre-Islamic Iran, people were definitely acquainted with it and used to call it Kunar. Variants of Santoor instrument can be seen in China, Eastern Europe and England and Germany and Austria as well as India, Cambodia and Americas. It can be found in Iraq, Egypt, Turkey and Armenia and Georgia as well. The shape of Persian Santoor is inspired by a ship, its strings like a fishing net and the sound it makes resembles the waves hitting the rocks at beach. Over time, This musical instrument has become standardized to “Sol” or “La”-tuned Santoors.
